Halloween in the UK vs the US

Halloween is observed rather differently in the UK and US. In the United States, Halloween is a major cultural event with deep roots going back to 19th century Irish and Scottish immigration — the US market is now worth over $12 billion annually. UK Halloween was historically more muted, centred on apple-bobbing and bonfires, with trick-or-treating not becoming widespread until the 1980s as American cultural influence grew. Today the UK market exceeds £600 million, with trick-or-treating, pumpkin carving and fancy dress firmly established. One notable UK difference: in Scotland and parts of northern England, the tradition of "guising" — where children perform a party piece (song, poem or joke) in exchange for treats rather than simply saying "trick or treat" — is still observed.

The pumpkin carving tradition

The jack-o'-lantern tradition has its roots in an Irish folk tale about "Stingy Jack," a trickster who trapped the Devil and negotiated terms that meant he could be admitted to neither Heaven nor Hell after death. Condemned to wander the earth, Jack carried a burning coal in a hollowed turnip to light his way. Irish and Scottish immigrants to North America found that pumpkins — native to the continent and far larger than turnips — made superior lanterns, and the tradition transformed accordingly. The word "jack-o'-lantern" originally referred simply to a night watchman carrying a lantern before it became associated with Halloween. The US now produces approximately 1.5 billion pounds of pumpkins annually, the majority grown for Halloween carving.

Halloween records and statistics

Halloween is the second largest commercial holiday in the United States after Christmas. Approximately 69% of Americans celebrate Halloween in some form. The most popular adult costume in recent years has consistently been a witch, while children's top choices include superheroes and princesses. Americans consume approximately 600 million pounds of candy at Halloween — the equivalent of about 1.8 pounds per person. The world record for the heaviest pumpkin ever grown was set in 2021 by Stefano Cutrupi of Italy, at 1,226 kg (2,702 lbs). Michael Myers from Halloween (1978) wears a modified Captain Kirk mask from Star Trek, spray-painted white — one of cinema's most recognisable pieces of costume design created from a $1.98 prop.

About Halloween

Halloween, observed annually on 31 October, is one of the world's oldest and most widely celebrated festivals, with roots stretching back over 2,000 years to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain. On Samhain, Celts believed the boundary between the living and the dead became blurred, and the spirits of the deceased returned to earth. To ward off roaming ghosts, people lit bonfires and wore costumes — customs that survive in recognisable form today.

When the Romans conquered Celtic territories, Samhain merged with two Roman festivals: Feralia, commemorating the dead, and a day honouring Pomona, goddess of fruit and trees — possibly the origin of apple-bobbing. As Christianity spread, the Church established All Saints' Day on 1 November, with the preceding evening becoming All Hallows' Eve, eventually contracted to Halloween.

The jack-o'-lantern tradition originated in Ireland, where turnips rather than pumpkins were carved. Irish and Scottish immigrants brought the custom to America in the 19th century, where the native pumpkin proved a far superior carving medium. Trick-or-treating as we know it became widespread in North America in the 1930s and 1940s, spreading to the UK from the 1980s onwards.

Today Halloween is the second largest commercial holiday in the United States after Christmas, generating over $12 billion in annual spending. The UK market has grown dramatically, now exceeding £600 million per year. Over 179 million Americans participate in Halloween activities annually. The global costume industry alone is worth billions, with adults now spending as much on costumes as children.
