About Halloween
Halloween, observed annually on 31 October, is one of the world's oldest and most widely celebrated festivals, with roots stretching back over 2,000 years to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain. On Samhain, Celts believed the boundary between the living and the dead became blurred, and the spirits of the deceased returned to earth. To ward off roaming ghosts, people lit bonfires and wore costumes — customs that survive in recognisable form today.
When the Romans conquered Celtic territories, Samhain merged with two Roman festivals: Feralia, commemorating the dead, and a day honouring Pomona, goddess of fruit and trees — possibly the origin of apple-bobbing. As Christianity spread, the Church established All Saints' Day on 1 November, with the preceding evening becoming All Hallows' Eve, eventually contracted to Halloween.
The jack-o'-lantern tradition originated in Ireland, where turnips rather than pumpkins were carved. Irish and Scottish immigrants brought the custom to America in the 19th century, where the native pumpkin proved a far superior carving medium. Trick-or-treating as we know it became widespread in North America in the 1930s and 1940s, spreading to the UK from the 1980s onwards.
Today Halloween is the second largest commercial holiday in the United States after Christmas, generating over $12 billion in annual spending. The UK market has grown dramatically, now exceeding £600 million per year. Over 179 million Americans participate in Halloween activities annually. The global costume industry alone is worth billions, with adults now spending as much on costumes as children.
