What Gagarin experienced in space

Yuri Gagarin's 108-minute flight took him once around the Earth at an altitude ranging from 169km to 327km. He experienced weightlessness for the first time, reporting it as pleasant — he was able to eat and drink normally, dispelling fears that the human body might be unable to function in microgravity. He described Earth from orbit as "beautiful" with its blue halo of atmosphere. Communication with ground control was maintained throughout, and Gagarin was monitored by medical sensors that confirmed his physiological stability. The capsule's automatic systems controlled most of the flight — mission planners, uncertain how weightlessness might affect human psychology, had installed a lock on the manual controls that could be overridden by entering a code in a sealed envelope (to prove the cosmonaut was sufficiently rational to fly manually).

The space race context

Gagarin's flight came at a moment of maximum Cold War tension. The Bay of Pigs invasion of Cuba would begin just four days later on 17 April 1961. The Berlin Wall would be built in August. The Cuban Missile Crisis would bring the world to the brink of nuclear war in October 1962. Against this backdrop, Gagarin's flight was a devastating propaganda triumph for the Soviet Union — coming just three weeks before American Alan Shepard's first US spaceflight on 5 May 1961. President Kennedy responded by announcing the Apollo programme on 25 May 1961, committing the United States to landing a man on the Moon before the end of the decade — a goal achieved on 20 July 1969, eight years after Gagarin's pioneering orbit.

About Yuri Gagarin — First Human in Space

At 9:07am Moscow time on 12 April 1961, Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Alekseyevich Gagarin lifted off from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan aboard Vostok 1 and became the first human being to travel into outer space. His single orbit of the Earth lasted 108 minutes, reaching a maximum altitude of 327 kilometres. His single word on launch — "Poyekhali!" (Let's go!) — captured the world's imagination.

The flight was the culmination of the Soviet space programme, which had already achieved several firsts: the first satellite (Sputnik 1, 1957), the first living creature in space (the dog Laika, 1957) and the first lunar probe (Luna 2, 1959). The selection of Gagarin from twenty cosmonaut candidates was partly based on technical skills and partly on his appearance — Soviet officials wanted a photogenic, charismatic figure to represent the USSR on the world stage. They found their man. Gagarin's beaming smile became one of the most recognisable images of the 20th century.

The flight transformed Gagarin overnight from an unknown military pilot into one of the most famous humans alive. He toured dozens of countries to rapturous receptions, met heads of state and became a global symbol of human achievement. He was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union — the highest honour in the USSR — and received a standing ovation from the United Nations General Assembly.

Gagarin died on 27 March 1968, aged 34, when the MiG-15 training jet he was flying crashed near Kirzhach. 12 April is now celebrated globally as Yuri's Night, honouring his achievement and the broader human endeavour of space exploration. His spaceflight remains one of the defining moments of the 20th century — the first time a member of the human species left the planet and returned to tell the tale.
