About GCSE Results Day
GCSE Results Day 2026 falls on Thursday 20 August 2026 — one week after A-Level results, as it is every year. The date is set nationally by the Joint Council for Qualifications and applies across England, Wales and Northern Ireland. In 2027 it falls on Thursday 19 August.
What time can I collect my results?
Schools typically open for collection from 8:00am on results morning, though some start at 8:30am or 9:00am — your school will confirm the arrangements. If you can't collect in person, most schools will email results or release them to a nominated person; some post them. Results are never given out over the phone.
How does GCSE grading work?
In England, GCSEs are graded 9 to 1, with 9 the highest. A grade 4 is a "standard pass" and grade 5 a "strong pass" — most sixth forms and colleges ask for at least a 4 or 5 in English and maths, and higher grades in subjects you want to study at A-Level. In Wales, GCSEs keep the A*–G scale, and in Northern Ireland the CCEA board uses A*–G including a C* grade. The systems are designed to be broadly comparable: a grade 4 sits at roughly the bottom of the old grade C.
What if my grades are lower than expected?
If you miss a 4 in English language or maths, you'll usually resit — resit exams run in November for English and maths, and study of these subjects continues as part of any 16–18 course until you pass. For other subjects, talk to your intended sixth form or college on results day: entry requirements are often more flexible in practice than on paper, and course-switching is common. Your school can also request a review of marking from the exam board if a result looks clearly wrong.
