About September 11 Attacks
On the morning of 11 September 2001, nineteen terrorists coordinated by al-Qaeda hijacked four commercial aircraft in the United States. At 8:46am Eastern Time, American Airlines Flight 11 struck the North Tower of the World Trade Center in New York City. Seventeen minutes later, United Airlines Flight 175 struck the South Tower. At 9:37am, American Airlines Flight 77 crashed into the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia. The fourth aircraft, United Airlines Flight 93, crashed into a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania after passengers attempted to overpower the hijackers.
Both World Trade Center towers collapsed — the South Tower at 9:59am and the North Tower at 10:28am — due to structural failure caused by the fires. A total of 2,977 people were killed, excluding the 19 hijackers. The victims came from more than 90 nations. Among the dead were 412 emergency workers — 343 firefighters and paramedics from the New York City Fire Department, 23 NYPD officers and 37 Port Authority police officers — many of whom entered the towers to rescue survivors.
The attacks fundamentally altered global geopolitics, security, aviation, surveillance, civil liberties and international relations. The United States declared a War on Terror, invaded Afghanistan in October 2001 and Iraq in March 2003. The Transportation Security Administration was created. Airport security worldwide was transformed overnight. The Department of Homeland Security was established with a $40 billion annual budget.
The 9/11 Memorial and Museum now occupy the footprint of the Twin Towers. The Reflecting Absence memorial features two vast reflecting pools in the towers' footprints, with the names of all 2,977 victims inscribed on bronze parapets surrounding them. One World Trade Center — at 541 metres the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere — opened in November 2014. The events of 11 September 2001 remain the defining moment of the early 21st century.
