About A-Level Results Day
A-Level Results Day 2026 falls on Thursday 13 August 2026. The date is set nationally by the Joint Council for Qualifications (JCQ) and applies to every exam board — AQA, Pearson Edexcel, OCR and WJEC — across England, Wales and Northern Ireland. In 2027 it falls on Thursday 12 August; it is always the Thursday in the middle of August, one week before GCSE results.
What time are results released?
Most schools and colleges open their doors from 8:00am, though some release results from 8:30am or later — check with your centre. If you applied to university, UCAS updates your application status in the UCAS Hub from around 8:00am on results morning. Importantly, UCAS shows only your university decision — confirmed, insurance or clearing — not your actual grades, which you collect from your school or receive by email or post.
What if I don't get the grades I need?
If you miss your firm offer, your insurance choice is considered automatically. If you hold no offer, Clearing is the established route: thousands of courses at most UK universities remain available, and universities staff dedicated Clearing hotlines from results morning. Decisions are often made within a phone call. Around one in eight students who start university each autumn found their place through Clearing, so it is a normal route — not a failure route. You can also consider a resit year, a gap year with reapplication, or degree apprenticeships, whose application windows often remain open into September.
Can results be challenged?
Yes. Your school can request a review of marking from the exam board if a grade looks wrong — priority reviews exist for students with a university place at stake. Be aware grades can go down as well as up on review. There is also a formal appeals process beyond the review stage.
